The disadvantages of using traditional methods to heat a bearing are numerous and varied. Oil baths, or even direct flame, are techniques that, although not recommended, are still used.

In today's article we will remind you of the main reasons why these methods should be discarded, and we will take the opportunity to introduce the SKF portable induction heater TWIM 15versatile equipment for fast, easy and safe hot assembly.

Risks and disadvantages of using traditional hot methods

According to the failure analysis statistics of the SKF brand16% of premature bearing failures are the result of using an improper mounting technique. Hot mounting makes this task much easier, but the process must be controllable and cautious.

Despite the recommendations of experts, there are still many practitioners who continue to use alternative methods to the induction heating. In fact, we continue to meet customers who come to us looking for an optimal solution after finding that their traditional heating methods - oil baths or direct flames - had ended up damaging their bearings.

The use of a direct flame is an inefficient method.

We do not recommend, under any circumstances, the use of a direct flame to heat the bearings. This is a method in which it is not possible to control the temperature and results in significant damage to the steel structure.

Oil baths for heating the bearings

This method has even more drawbacks. The temperature reached by the bearing cannot be monitored in real time and the energy consumption required to heat the bearing is substantially higher than if this task were carried out with an induction heater.

On the other hand, the bearing can become contaminated by dirty oil and its service life can be reduced. Furthermore, handling these hot, oily parts considerably increases the likelihood of workplace accidents.

Ovens and heating plates

The use of this technique is admissible in the case of heating small batches of bearings. It is strongly discouraged for large bearings for two reasons: inefficiency and dangerous handling for the operator.

Induction heating is the safest and most efficient alternative

Induction heaters are the most modern, agile, controllable, clean and safe method for operators. In addition, it does not damage the bearing, extending its useful life and positively affecting maintenance costs. Undoubtedly, compared to other traditional alternatives, we strongly recommend it.

SKF TWIM 15 portable induction heater

This is a portable option without the need for yokes or magnetic support bars. The SKF TWIM 15 can be used to heat bearings and small solid ring-shaped parts, making it a very versatile solution for manufacturers and MRO technicians.

Thanks to an intelligent structure and operating software, the temperature of the bearings or parts is automatically monitored and stops heating as soon as the required temperature is reached. It is also equipped with a user-friendly LED control panel. In this regard, SKF's own TWIM 15 detects the size of the bearing or part and heats accordingly. This induction heater allows different power settings to regulate the heating of more sensitive components.
