The origin of compressed air
In 1871, two young and daring entrepreneurs named Simon Ingersoll and Henry Clark started in the rock drilling industry by founding the Ingersoll Sergeant Drill Company in New York. They pioneered the use of compressed air to facilitate certain difficult tasks.
Little by little they grew and made a name for themselves, until 1902, when they managed to revolutionize the market by introducing the use of compressed air in industry, after manufacturing the first portable compressor in history.
Birth of Ingersoll Rand
On the other hand, in the pyrotechnics sector, there was the Rand Drill Company owned by the brothers Addison and Jasper Rand. They were engaged in the manufacture and sale of explosives, although they sporadically carried out mining and drilling. They soon realized that they needed high-performance drilling machinery to make such drilling deeper and more profitable and decided to contact Simon Ingersoll and Henry Clark.
In 1905 they merged to form Ingersoll Rand. This union favored the growth and potential of the two companies, to the point of becoming the biggest power in the sector at the time.
Together they built aqueducts and tunnels in New York, Washington D.C., West Point, New Jersey, etc. Gradually, Ingersoll Rand has been expanding around the world and today we can find representation of the firm in the most remote places on the planet.
Today, with 147 years of existence, 47,000 employees, representation in 99 countries and a turnover of 22.5 billion dollars, Ingersoll Rand is one of the most stable and strongest companies among manufacturers of pneumatic and electric impact tools.
