Like SKF distributors the last 10 years, we are going to explain in this article the concepts related to the skate, skateboard and longboard bearingsThe aim is to help you choose the bearings that best suit your needs.
One of the few pieces of information that we are clear about when it comes to this topic is usually the bearing type. It is the 608 that makes 22 mm. of outer Ø, 8 mm. of inner Ø and 7 mm. of width.
Another fact is that we can find it of any origin and brand and that prices vary a lot from one brand to another, but to know which one to choose, we recommend that you continue reading this article.
A bearing is composed of: outer race, inner race, a series of balls or rollers and a cage that maintains the position of the balls. In addition, in order to be protected, bearings can be sealed. There are two types of sealing; a plastic-coated brass layer covering the side of the bearing and shielding with a steel sheet.
What are the existing bearing regulations?
The standard bearing dimensions are: inside diameter (d), outside diameter (D), radial bearing width (B), axial bearing height (T) and rounded edges (r).
- ISOPrescribes tolerances and permissible error limits for the main dimensions (inside and outside diameters, width and rounded flanges) required for the mounting of bearings.
- ABEC Determines standards for bearing dimensions, tolerances, geometry and noise. Instead, it ignores criteria such as side loading, impact resistance, material selection and grade, lubrication, types of seals, ball and raceway spacing, installation requirements and the need for maintenance and cleaning.
- Recently, bearings are being marketed that do not use a standard, but rather a terminology ILQdeveloped by a company. There is no way to compare a bearing that follows ISO or ABEC standards and an IQL bearing in a safe way as they are on different scales.
- JISJapan's Industrial Standard is based on the "Industrial Standardization Law".
SKF bearing characteristics
- Designed to meet the needs of different types of skaters.
- High level of quality.
- They are characterized by robustness, protection, low friction and comfort, which guarantee the correct functioning of the skates.
SKF bearing types
- SKF STUNTmaster. - Designed to withstand a frontside, a torque, a soul... Compatible with any wheel with a 608 hub size, with the appropriate spacers they are recommended for aggressive skating.
- SKF FREEstyler. -Includes 8 high quality 608 bearings for skateboards. Designed for those who practice regularly and intensively with skateboard or longboard. These bearings:
- They offer a very smooth ride.
- They support heavy loads.
- They are greased .
- They are maintenance free.
- They achieve good balancing due to low friction grease filling.
- Optimum protection against dust and splashes thanks to a red non-contact seal on one side and a metal seal on the other.
- Manufactured from chrome-plated steel to SKF's high precision ISO5/ABEC5 standards.
