The concept of vacuum has accompanied us throughout our existence. The principle, which is based on the total absence of matter, has been studied by philosophers and physicists for centuries, leading to great discoveries.

Related to the vacuum, you may have heard about the Venturi effect. Therefore, we want you to learn more about its features, functionalities and how it can be of great use in many industries.

We will also tell you about the vacuum generators of the renowned brand FestoThe Venturi effect is used as the basis for all its generators.

What is the Venturi effect?

Schematic of the Venturi principle showing flow, suction and differential pressure.

The Venturi effect describes how the velocity of a fluid increases as the cross section of the vessel through which it flows decreases (as when flowing through a funnel).

This action creates the depression that generates the vacuum.

As a curious fact, the "explosions" of the windows when a natural phenomenon occurs, such as a tornado, is due to the Venturi effect. As the wind blows at a very high speed, it creates a low pressure and the air inside the house tries to occupy that vacuum.

Venturi effect applications

There are many applications that benefit from this principle. Below we will show you some of them:

  • Carburetors utilize the suction effect of gasoline in the intake air stream of an engine.
  • Piston engine cylinder heads have multiple Venturi zones, such as the valve seat and port inlet.
  • Sprays such as aerosols and perfumes work from this effect.
  • Automatic pool cleaners use the flow of pressurized water to collect sediment and debris.
  • Racing cars are designed with this effect in mind in order to increase downforce and thus be able to reach higher speeds.
  • Low speed wind tunnels can be considered very large Venturi spaces, because they take advantage of this concept to increase the speed and decrease the pressure to simulate the expected flight conditions.
  • Foam dispensers, used to introduce firefighting foam concentrate into fire protection systems.

Festo products for vacuum generation

When we talk about the concept of emptiness, we must be clear that there are two ways to generate it.

The first is with vacuum pumpsThe gas or liquid is completely extracted from a system by means of a gas or liquid extraction system.

One characteristic of these devices is that, when activated, they create the vacuum of the entire line being a drawback for some applications that require a vacuum in situ.

The second is as of vacuum generators.

Festo has a range of single-stage vacuum generators that operate according to the Venturi effect principle.

These generators are of great utility for industries that require industrial automation in their processes and want to realize it from vacuum techniques.

Festo VN vacuum generators

Festo VN vacuum generators with compact design and pneumatic connections

The electric vacuum generators VN from Festo is designed for centralized vacuum generation. Its range covers diameters from 0.45 to 3 mm.

Its low weight and compact design makes it very suitable for direct mounting in the work area. In addition, it is equipped with the Festo Plug&Work which facilitates simple and fast assembly.

One of its advantages over vacuum pumps is that this generator dispenses with reservoirs, long lines and special vacuum valves.

These ejectors are equipped with open mufflers that no maintenance required. The open muffler allows for low noise operation and there is the possibility to reduce noise to a minimum by adding extra accessories.

Vacuum generator OVEM

Festo OVE vacuum generator with integrated display and electronic components

The OVEM pneumatic vacuum generator de Festo cuenta con una adaptabilidad asombrosa para cualquier tipo de sector industrial.

It has a wide variety of selectable functions and 5 performance classes to optimally match the right solution.

Another interesting aspect to highlight is that it has the integration of the new communication standard IO-Link.

With IO-Link®, the user will have a fast and intuitive start-up with this universal solution for device visualization and parameterization.

Therefore, the benefits provided by OVEM vacuum generators are:

  • Simple connection and installation.
  • Reduced response times.
  • Monitoring.
  • Adjustability.
  • Low maintenance.
  • Profitability.

Training on Festo's Vacuum Technologies

Festo offers the possibility to expand and acquire knowledge about vacuum technology by comparing it with compressed air.

At this courseIn this section, you will learn more about the techniques for generating, regulating and adjusting vacuum, such as the Venturi effect, among others.

It lasts 12 hours spread over 2 days.

This training is ideal for all those who want to deepen their knowledge of these technologies and especially for engineers, technicians and personnel involved in the design, use or maintenance of pneumatic systems.
