The hammer is one of the most essential elements in any workshop. It can be found in multitude of shapes, weights and sizessuch as the classic ball-head hammer, carpenter's hammer, sheet metal hammer, nail hammer, etc. In addition, each one of them has a specific application in each sector.
Our ancestors already used different tools for beating, either to break things or to assemble them. At some point in history, someone came up with the idea of joining a wooden handle and an iron mallet (stone in its original form), thus creating the first hand tool in history. Over time, this tool has been polished and perfected, until it became the hammer we all know.
Thanks to the appearance of this hand tool, human beings appreciated the need to continue creating more tools to facilitate their daily tasks.
Hammer types
Depending on the intended use, we will use different types of hammers:
- Traditional carpenter's hammer. Composed on one side by a wide, square-shaped striking head and on the other side, a wedge for more delicate work. It is not usually very large and heavy, as it is recommended for jobs that do not require a lot of force.
- Nail hammer. This type of hammer is widely used by carpenters and formworkers in the construction industry. It has a hammer head slightly smaller than that of the carpenter at one end and on the other side, nails that have the purpose of levering and extracting all types of fasteners: staples, nails, screwsetc.
- Hammer or nylon mallet. It is an essential tool when performing work that requires not leaving any marks on the material.
- Ball peen hammer. It has a flat end for a safe and firm strike and the other end has a hemisphere. It is widely used in the metal sector, especially in blacksmithing. In addition, in the following sectors it is very common to use the ball peen hammer: forging, locksmithing, metal carpentry and plumbing.
- Sheet metal hammer. At both ends it has flat and very wide striking faces in order to give better shape to the sheet when working it.
